Don't Get Pregnant ...
Till You've Come Clean From Drugs

Using drugs while you're attempting a pregnancy may unwittingly expose your unborn baby to growth retardation, mental problems and infant addiction. So come clean from them before you're pregnant and don't get pregnant while on treatment.

Harmful Effects of Recreational Drugs:

  • Marijuana - Marijuana upsets your menstrual cycle and ovulation. You'll experience shorter cycles and shorter luteal phases (which is the second half of your cycle), decreasing the chances of a fertilised egg implanting in your uterus. If you're already pregnant, marijuana increases the chance of miscarriage and causes fetal growth problems. Your baby may be born premature, under-weight, suffer developmental delays and experience behavioral and learning problems in the future.

  • Cocaine - Cocaine hinders conception and if you do get pregnant, endangers the life of your unborn child as it could lead to placenta bleeding. It'll also lead to premature birth and other significant complications for newborns. Babies born to addicted moms can suffer withdrawal. Men who are regular cocaine users suffer a lack of libido and impairment in their production of testosterone and sperm.

  • Heroin and Methadone - These narcotic-type drugs act on your brain and have an indirect negative effect on your ovulation and menustruation. Using these regularly will lead to poor nutrition, weight loss and make you susceptible to various infectious diseases. This translates into general poor health and will certainly affect your capacity to conceive.

  • Anabolic steroids - These steroids, used to increase body and muscle mass can lead to a range of general health problems thus compromising your fertility.

Harmful Effects of Some Prescription Drugs:

Common prescription medications that you can get from your physician or purchased over-the-counter, such as painkillers, antibiotics, anti-depressants, sleeping pills, antacids, laxatives and health supplements can cause birth defects in your unborn child.

Even medications prescribed by doctors for any thyroid problem, diabetes, asthma, epilepsy or thrombosis can also harm your fetus.

It is prudent to talk with your fertility specialist about any and all prescription drugs you are taking if you're attemtping a pregnancy. It is better to talk to him before you take anything.
