Menstrual Cycle Disorder
in Female Infertility

Before discussing about menstrual cycle disorder, we need to understand how important menstrual cycle is the key to your conception. It is good to understand how the cycle works and what can go wrong. Such knowledge will empower you to deal with factors within your control.

The following are some menstrual cycle disorders:

  • Amenorrhea (no menstruation):

If you have never had a menstruation or if it stops suddenly other than for the reason of pregnancy, you're having Amenorrhea. There are two types: primary and secondary. If you have never menstruated, you have primary amenorrhea. If you have been having regular menstrual cycles, and then stop for more than six months, you have secondary amenorrhea. The secondary type is the more likely cause for female infertility.

Secondary Amenorrhea can be caused by:

  • Medication that you are taking that disrupts your cycles.
  • Hypothyroidism, a condition of insufficient production of thyroid hormones that affect your menstruation.

  • Cushing's disease, where your adrenal glands are overactive, resulting hormonal fluctuations.

  • Uterine surgery that you've had in the past.
  • Anovulation (not ovulating):

Anovulation is when you're not ovulating at all. A known cause for Anovulation is vigorous dieting, resulting in significant weight-loss within a short time-span disrupting your ovulation process. While obesity can result in some degree of female infertility, so can a sudden and excessive weight-loss.

  • Oligoovulation (ovulating irregularly):

If you're having irregular menstrual cycle, it may or may not be caused by any inherent problems in your reproductive system and may not lead to female infertility. It is however, harder to get pregnant if you have an irregular menstruation. Then again, sometimes, all you have to do to conceive is to learn to time your copulation to coincide with your fertile days. You will know when you have ovulated in your cycles by learning to read your body's physiological signs of ovulation.

  • A Short Luteal Phase:

The luteal phase in a woman's menstrual cycle is an important phase at which Progesterone is produced to maintain the lining of the uterus to prepare for the implantation of a fertilized egg.

Some women experience a defective Luteal phase where it does not happen long enough for a pregnancy to occur. A short Luteal phase causes female infertility by inducing early miscarriages.

If you have been recording your basal body temperatures, your BBT charts will tell you whether your luteal phase is normal. If you suspect that you may have a short Luteal phase, do consult a doctor immediately. Confirmation is needed.
