When Morning Sickness Strikes...

Morning sickness can strike you suddenly without you suspecting that you're pregnant!

This is because your nausea may come with or without vomiting and its symptoms can be easily mistakened with common illnesses such as food poisoning or the flu.

You'll only have a clue to what's happening inside your body when your nausea persists. When you begin to develop a heightened sensitivity to smell and taste, even detesting some of your usual and favourite food, you'll wonder, "Am I pregnant?"

Yes, you could be!

Morning Sickness Symptoms

About 30 to 50 percent of expectant mothers experience morning sickness during their first trimester.

It usually strikes hard in the morning and gradually decreases in the day. However, this nauseous feeling can also happen at anytime of the day. In some cases, it can last the whole day.

Nausea tends to be more common and severe in first pregnancies, where expectant first-time moms are less prepared for the onslaught of hormonal changes. If you're a first-time mom, your anxieties could aggravate your morning sickness too.

Ptyalism; a condition where you salivate excessively may sometimes compound your problem. Thankfully, you don't usually have to suffer past the third month. (Then again, it can last past the first trimester for some women.)

Very few expectant moms have it so badly that they vomit continuously. This form of severe morning sickness is called Hyperemesis Gravidarum. The vomiting can be so severe that you end up being dehydrated and malnourished. In such cases, your doctor will prescribe an anti-nausea medication to help you get over this stage of pregnancy. Severe early nausea is sometimes an indication of the conception of twins or multiple pregnancy. This can be confirmed through scanning.

Morning Sickness Cures

Other than the anti-nausea medication given by your doctor, there are things you could do to minimize your discomforts.

Your challenge is to keep your food down. You could feel nauseous by just looking at the food placed before you, let alone eat it. What are you to do?

One way to cope with this is to eat before you're hungry. Hunger triggers morning sickness. Therefore stave it off by having a snack before getting up in the morning. For example, you could eat a high protein snack before bed or even in the night so that you won't be too hungry in the morning. Your snack can be something interesting like nuts or butter crackers, anything that appeals to you.

Another way is to avoid the sight, smell and taste of food that really upsets you. Let your stomach be your guide, don't force feed yourself.

Some expectant moms wear acupressure bands around their wrists to ward off nausea. These bands work by putting pressure on particular points on your wrists. You could check up with your local drug store for them.

To ensure that you have the right amount of nutrition, you should begin taking supplements as advised by your doctor.

It will also help if you reduce your intake of caffeine.
